The Boeing B17G Flying Fortress        -        A Bombardment Airplane
This is what my uncle, DICK BALE, was shot down in and put in a POW camp.
B17's FLYING
Vern, while working at Boeing. was able to watch a B17 being completely reconstructed in a factory  area in Renton. He did not volunteer to help as he did with the B29  in 1991..
He was able to get a hold of B17 maintenance manual and copy it.  He has place several images on this.site, from that manual...

HEROS IN THE SKY

Capt. Glenn Rojohn of the 8th Air Force's 100th Bomb Group was flying his B-17G Flying Fortress bomber on a raid over Hamburg. On their return home they were attacked by German Fighters. Rojohn saw a B-17  ahead of him burst into flames. He gunned his ship forward to fill in the gap. His plane collided with the other B-17 which stuck to the belly of his ship. They soon slammed into the ground. Click image for story

German with a Heart
Charlie Brown was a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot with the 379th Bomber Group at Kimbolton, England. His B-17 was called 'Ye Old Pub' and was in a terrible state, having been hit by flak and fighters. The compass was damaged and they were flying deeper over enemy territory instead of heading home to Kimbolton.
