As a naval person, the photo at right can mean a lot to a sailor's spouse. ... Vern actually took this photo in 1966 but he and wife Letha saw it while on their honeymoon in 1960 ... The
Norwegian Lady is a memorial gift given by the
people of Moss, Norway. She stands at 25th Street, facing the shipwreck
site of the Norwegian bark Dictator that sank in 1891. Local lifesavers
risked their own lives to rescue the captain, his family and crew off
the
floundering ship, an act which inspired the gift of this beautiful
lady.
She replaced the worn Dictator's female masthead figure that had stood
guard over the site at the oceanfront since the days of the sinking.

...1954
It was here that Vern first swam in the Atlantic. |
This
1954 Buick Convertible was owned by Dwain Pavey of North Liberty, IN.
He
was a Yeoman on the Amphibious Base, East, who's barracks was
previously
occupied by waves. He liked to drive home on long weekends and located
persons like me who's home was up that way. |

We also cruised this beach area and had little trouble picking up girls. The drives home always started early on friday afternoon and we would be in South Bend by 8:00 the next morning. Speeds sometimes were up to 90 mi. per hour on the very straight roads of eastern Indiana. |
