History of ATR-7  -  Page 14

Tuesday 24 October ATR-7 was underway in accordance with a confidential despatch to assist the Cuban Naval vessel C.S. FOUR de SEPTIEMBRE which was reported to be aground off the north coast of Cuba in the position of Lat. 22° 24' 14"N, and Lon. 84° 34' 06"W, southwest of Cayo Buenavist Light.
At 0001 Cayo Jutias Light was sighted abeam to port at a distance of 10 miles. Changed speed to 125 rpm. and changed course. At 0730 changed speed to 2/3 ahead and prepared to anchor in view of the Cuban ship which was hard aground with Pasa Jai Alai Light bearing 089° PGC. ATR-7's lowered her motor whaleboat with a salvage party at 1050 and boarded the grounded vessel to make an inspection. Over an houe later the salvage party returned to make a report to the Captain. The wind was strong and the sea very choppy. ATR-7 had to wait until the weather moderated before trying to do any salvage work.
The morning of 25 October saw ATR-7 still anchored off the grounded ship C.S. FOUR de SEPTIEMBRE waiting for the weather to moderate. Heavy sea from the northeast makes boarding salvage impracticable at this time. At 1030 the Commanding officer and salvage officer left the ship in the motor whaleboat in an attempt to board and inspect the grounded cuban ship. The party returned without boarding the vessel. The weather is still rough and the port anchor chain was veered from 30 to 45 fathoms at water edge.
